Clio is a website and travel app that reveals the history behind markers, buildings, monuments, and other landmarks throughout the U.S. Users can view landmarks near their location and then learn about these places through short articles written by students with he mentorship of their professors, along with other scholars, museum professionals, and local historical societies. Using the app, the public can discover nearby landmarks, browse cities, enjoy a curated walking or driving tour that offers audio and text, or turn on location-based notifications to learn about history as they walk or drive. More than a thousand organizations and 500 professors have worked with staff and students to author the growing library of over 40,000 articles for historic buildings, markers, monuments, and other landmarks in Clio. There are also more than 1,700 walking tours and trails across the United States and beyond that combine individual articles for landmarks, along with “contributing entries” that reside within a specific tour or trail to offer an additional layer of interpretation beyond landmarks.
