Protoye Kumar Mohanta

Protoye Kumar Mohanta is an incoming PhD student starting in Spring 2026 at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), where he will be joining the MIGHTY Lab. He holds a B. Sc. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), graduating with academic distinction (CGPA of 3.64/4.00), earning both the Dean's List Award and the University Merit Scholarship.

Research Focus and Expertise
Protoye's primary research interests lie at the intersection of Machine Learning, Medical Image Processing, and Optimization. His undergraduate research at BUET included developing a privacy-preserving Non-Negative Matrix Factorization framework for decentralized data using correlated noise, which has resulted in a publication currently under review.


He also possesses strong practical experience in:
Digital Signal Processing (DSP), including the implementation of the TCSC algorithm for Ventricular Fibrillation detection in ECG.


Internet of Things (IoT) and Embedded Systems, having developed an adaptive microcontroller-based smart home system for energy efficiency and user comfort, and an IoT-enabled smart health monitoring system.


Network Systems Design, including the engineering of a concurrent multi-client chat server using socket programming.


Key Skills and Achievements
Protoye is proficient in several programming languages and tools, including C/C++, MATLAB, Python, and has skills in Deep Neural Network and Image Processing frameworks. He also has hands-on experience with hardware like Arduino and FPGA. Beyond academics, he is a former regional finalist of the International HULT Prize Competition and was the Champion of the Bangladesh National Mathematical Olympiad – Regional Round (2014-2015).
