Dr. Mei-Ling Shyu
Dr. Mei-Ling Shyu has been an excellent role model and mentor for her students. As the only female tenured faculty in her previous position in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Miami, she has been able to recruit many highly motivated graduate/undergraduate students, especially female/minority students. She has supervised more than fifteen female students and many minority students (BS, MS, and Ph.D.). Her research interest includes data science, spatial computing, data mining, AI, machine learning, AR/VR, big data analytics, multimedia information systems, database systems, and biomedical applications. She has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses such as Data Mining, Agent Technology, Principles of Artificial Intelligence, Database Management Systems, and Advanced Big Data Analytics. Dr. Shyu was awarded IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award, IEEE Big Data Security Woman of Achievement Award, IEEE Computer Society TCMC (Technical Committee on Multimedia Computing) Service Award, and ACM Distinguished Scientists Award. She and her students received four Best Paper Awards and two Best Student Paper Awards, all from IEEE conferences. In addition, her students have been performing exceptionally well professionally. For example, one of her female Ph.D. students is currently a tenured associate professor at Purdue University Fort Wayne, and several of her female Ph.D. students hold important positions such as Principal Data Scientist, Senior Manager in Data Science, and VP at their companies. Her goal is to involve women and minority undergraduate students in the educational pipeline by providing a research environment to attract them to graduate studies in science and engineering. Dr. Shyu is a Fellow of IEEE, AAAS, AIMBE, AAIA, and SIRI.
